YULETIDE 2023

Dear Yuletide Author:

October, again. The collective lie we call "time" persists. The formatting of the letter is a little all over the place, as I was rushing to finish it in a timely fashion. Sorry about that.

More importantly, thank you for participating this year. If you've done Yuletide before, welcome back. If you're new, I hope this is a fun experience for you.

Please regard the prompts I've written as suggestions: if you have your heart set on your own idea, I will love it, so long as it remains mindful of the DNW list.

I am always open to treats!

YES:
  • Character studies
  • Ship fic
  • Internal conflict
  • Meta/Deconstruction
  • Trolling/Teasing shenanigans
  • Toxic relationships
  • Friends to lovers
  • Enemies to lovers
  • Exes who can't quit each other
  • Gap moe (Dissonance between appearance and actions)
  • Relationships where partners balance each other out/make up for what the other(s) lack
  • Humor
  • Happy endings
  • Spoilers
  • Casefic
  • Cultural/World Building Details that are consistent with the setting of the story

DO NOT WANT:
  • Culture depicted through a lens that is inconsistent with the original story setting (ex. a story about characters going to Prom where that convention does not exist)
  • Western High School/College AUs
  • Second Person POV (epistolary is the exception)
  • RP/Script format fic
  • First person POV
  • Chat room format fic
  • Angst without in-story resolution (angst as a catalyst for action is fine)
  • Permanent death of requested characters (time loops are okay!)
  • Crossovers
  • Crack (humor that makes sense in canon context is perfectly fine)
  • A/B/O AU
  • Songfic
  • Unrequested gender identity headcanons, neurodivergent headcanons, raceswaps or genderswaps

I am a million percent trash and will always love smut of any kind, including PWP. For your comfort, NSFW LIKES AND DNWs are separate.

Thank you, and happy writing!

Oshi no Ko (Anime on HiDive)

This frame in particular destroys me every single time.

I love mystery series. I love revenge stories. I love idols. I love social commentary and critique. Oshi no Ko was a natural fit, where all those tastes converge in a fascinating way. The tragic murder of rising idol, Hoshino Ai, comes on the eve of her biggest concert yet. Aquamarine, one of the children she birthed and raised in secret, has dedicated his life to finding the mastermind and taking revenge.

Arima Kana
Kana is a child actress that meets Aqua on a job. Originally praised for her talent, interest in her waned as she grew older. When the opportunities dried up, her own mother left her. Still, she does her best to persist in show business: swallowing her pride, she maintains a professional, agreeable front even in the most unfavorable situations. The one person she never felt a need to bite her tongue towards was Aqua.

Hoshino "Aqua" Aquarmarine
Aqua is seeking revenge for the murder of his mother (and forever Best Girl), Hoshino Ai. He is serious, sarcastic and gets a nasty hit of PTSD and guilt whenever he experiences Joy, because his mother hasn't been avenged.

I think an important aspect of their dynamic is that he seems the most like his pre-revenge quest self when he's bickering with Kana. As revenge becomes Aqua's priority, even Kana isn't spared Aqua's deception and machinations.

I also think about this a lot:

When it comes to Kana and Aqua, I am, for better or worse, a simple creature who just wants to see Kana happy. Give her some kind of win, please.

If you'd like to take it in a toxic or obsessive direction, that's great too.

Possible suggestions:
  • During a time when most people are with loved ones, Kana is alone (as usual). Aqua keeps her company (if you are considering Christmas, please note that in Japan, that is commonly a holiday for couples).
  • Kana gets cast as a heroine and the leading man is Aqua
  • Aqua and Kana bickering about romance scenes and how easy (or hard) they are to do.
  • (I'm not really serious but also) Kana punches Aqua. That's it, that's the prompt.
  • Future Fic: After Aqua gets his revenge, he quits show business to focus on academics in pursuit of becoming a surgeon. He and Kana stay in touch.
  • An alternate timeline AU where Kana becomes Aqua's accomplice for revenge.

Natsume Yuujinchou|Natsume's Book of Friends
Natsume-Yuujinchou-full-707750

Every episode, I steel my heart and point at my screen yelling, "HA! YOU WON'T MAKE ME CRY THIS TIME!," and I end up the floor, sobbing. It's that kind of healing. I know I am very late to this party, so I'm pretty sure I don't have to sell anyone on it. I am the most enthusiastic about spoilers. Don't hold back for my sake. Give me the dirt. (Please.)

I love every soft moment Natsume gets to have, and I am simultaneously enamored with him showereddrowning in sincere affection, support and friendship. Natsume deserves to be nurtured and reassured that it is more than okay for him to exist. But I would also love to see him completely wrecked. Or stepping on people. All good things.

I know there is so much more to Matoba, but I am extremely activated when he's invading Natsume's space. I am that person. I'm sorry I can offer no intelligent thoughts.

I love, love, love, love Natori. How he empathizes with Natsume, providing support and encouraging Natsume's connections with other people. Every time Natsume laughs or gets annoyed with his sparkly celeb persona, it gives me life.

While I didn't request Nyanko-sensei, it makes sense that he's with Natsume, so feel free to include him. Just please don't kill him, that's a level of sad I don't think I can handle.

Possible Suggestions:
  • I will NEVER tire of Natsume Getting Kidnapped and Dressed Up Pretty to help youkai, then running into an exorcist. Either Natori or Matoba will work, if all three were investigating the same incident from different angles and their paths cross, even better.
  • AU where Natsume chooses to become Natori's partner. How does that change their relationship and their differing perspectives on youkai over time?
  • Natsume marries into either the Natori or Matoba clans. The marriage can be fake, strategic (to protect youkai), or serious.
  • Natori whisks Natsume away on Yet Another Job disguised as a vacation that typically has Romantic Implications (an onsen, the beach, a riverside inn in a forest).
  • Matoba sees Natsume poking fun at Natori's playboy persona and joins the attack.
  • An ordinary day in the life of top celebrity, Natori Shuuichi.

CØDE:BREAKER (Most of the anime is not good, but the OVAs are the most faithful and give the fastest impression of the characters)

While present-day Japan looks clean and tidy on the surface, countless criminals manage to evade justice. Enter the Code:Breakers: government-sanctioned teenaged assassins who discreetly make society's evils disappear with their super powers. Sakurakouji Sakura, a girl who believes wholeheartedly in Justice and the sanctity of life accidentally meets one of the Code:Breakers, Ogami Rei. Determined to keep him from killing again, she doggedly follows on his heels from job to job, challenging her ideals as they try to unravel the mystery of her immunity to the Code:Breakers' powers; the deeply suppressed trauma that drives her to defend the lives of even the most despicable criminals; and how Sakura and Rei's fates are intertwined.

Spoilers will be blocked
like this.

Sakurakouji Sakura
Sakura is a brand of capable and academically intelligent, yet foolishly naive that I love: On one hand, she has top grades, earned the highest level of black belts in Aikido, Judo and Karate, and wields emasculating levels of super-strength, while being hailed as the most admired beauty in school. On the other, she constantly finds herself in danger thanks to her inability to discern malice, and takes over 100 chapters to finally figure out the difference between familial affection and romantic attraction. She also puts Ogami in awkward (fanservice-y) positions that all their classmates misconstrue as romantic, but has no awareness of how bystanders perceive it. In the Dog and Cat dynamic, she is the dog. Optimistic, idealistic, and open, with a stiff samurai-like style of speech. She is a blunt ray of hope and sunshine.
I also enjoy how she moves forward, dedicating herself to saving lives her way by studying to be a doctor, rather than just throwing herself in the Codebreakers' path.

Ogami Rei
Rei is the cat in the cat-dog dynamic: Aloof, cold, and violent. Initially he insists that he's only monitoring Sakura as a job, he grows more attached to her over the course of the series. He often puts himself in danger and sometimes humiliates himself for her sake (At one point, he puts on an silly mascot costume and his comrades take pictures). While he dislikes keeping objects because he doesn't want reminders of people he will ultimately leave behind, he memorizes what's important before destroying them and vows to keep those memories alive until he dies. I really like that
despite their mutual decision to pursue their own paths of saving humanity separately, he's been watching Sakura from the shadows and discreetly does what he can to support her.

Fujiwara Toki
A Lazy Pervert-presenting, rich, private school guy who is smarter, more hardworking, caring and tortured than he comes off. His older sister is the world to him, and after she gave him a portion of her abilities, he's mostly successful at keeping her off the battlefield. Ogami is his rival, but they work well as a team. He has a habit of running his mouth and picking fights Ogami and Heike and even a puppy. It doesn't take much to rile him up, which is extra funny when he hits the limits of his abilities and physically reverts back to being a child. With his good looks and flirtatious personality, he's popular with girls. He tries to appeal to Sakura as well, but she often doesn't Get It or outright ignores it. When he goes too far (groping her, or shoving his face in her bra drawer), either Sakura or someone else will deliver the punishment he deserves. This is a running gag.

Heike Masaomi
One of the original Code:Breakers; powerful enough to bypass the early deaths many of his comrades face. He's 100 years old, but still looks like a teenager and attends Sakura's high school. He is often found in unusual, often inappropriate locations reading erotic novels (he insists they are "art," but that feels criminal when he's in the school's hallways). Despite his eccentricities, he is part of the student council and is assigned to monitor Toki and Ogami's work progress and assess Sakura's value as an asset. His ability is light manipulation, and he often uses beams of light to create whips, or his favorite— shibari rope. Toki and Sakura are often tied up for comedic effect (Toki moreso, often when he gets mouthy), but only one of them understands the implication (it's not Sakura).

Suggested Prompts:
  • Bondage fun with Heike
  • Post-series, Ogami's Sakura Observation Diary (or Heike or Toki observing Ogami observing Sakura)
  • Sakura and Ogami reuniting
  • An incident leads to the Code:Breakers having to protect Sakura.
  • An injured Code:Breaker appears before Sakura for medical treatment

Blue Period (anime on Netflix)

Characters: Hashida Haruka, Takahashi Yotasuke and Yaguchi Yatora (in any combination)

Blue Period is an interesting series because it doesn't need an antagonist to have conflict. Who needs a villain when crippling self-doubt, depression and impostor syndrome exist?

Yaguchi Yatora
Yatora is wonderfully complex. He's definitely not perfect and learning on all fronts; his relationship with Yuka, struggles with Yotasuke and school all point to this, but he is improving. His opinion of himself and of his art is low, but his work strikes an emotional chord. The arc that helps Yatora see beyond Yotasuke's talent to his flaws and worries was much needed and well-executed, but after their trip around Shibuya together this relationship was set aside.

Takahashi Yotasuke
Yotasuke sometimes feels like a cat in human form and that is a charm point, to me. Converse to Yatora, he's confident in is technical art skills, but struggles to create emotional connections both in art and with people. Despite initially being cold to Yatora and generally avoidant of both him and Hashida, he's shown internally worrying over Yatora when they start college together. I feel like less is known about Yotasuke's relationship with Hashida, so exploring that either as friends(???) might be interesting.

Hashida Haruka
Hashida bridges the gap between the world as Yatora knows it and the Art World. He's knowledgeable without being condescending, insightful, and supportive on both the art and interpersonal fronts. I enjoy the guidance he provides to Yatora and how they worked together at the children's art school. Unlike Yatora and Yotasuke, Haruka has little interest in his own self-expression. However, he is pretty much aroused by the art of others (and I love that for him). I also find the bits where he reaches out to Yotasuke and gets shut down very funny.

Possible Suggestions:
Takahashi Yotasuke/Yaguchi Yatora
  • Yatora takes Yotasuke to the beach
  • Yatora takes Yotasuke to a Rabbit Cafe
  • The boys take a nap together
  • Arcade date

Hashida Haruka/Takahashi Yotasuke
  • An art history lecture on artists who use their love lives as inspiration for their art
  • Canon Divergent: What if Yotasuke called Hashida to spend New Year's Eve with him?
  • Haruka and Yotasuke go to Europe to attend the three major art festivals that happen to fall on the same year
  • Snippets of Yotasuke and Hashida's high school life (how they met, etc)

Hashida Haruka/Takahashi Yotasuke/Yaguchi Yatora idk if this is a thing but I would like it to be a thing
  • Museum Date
  • A tour of Shibuya, Round 2
  • Haruka decides to spoil Yotasuke and Yatora before running off to Europe to go to art festivals
  • Dragging Yotasuke and Yatora to Europe for the art festivals
  • Hanging Out (or drawing/painting) in Ueno Park
  • Yatora and Yotasuke helping Haruka find a feeling actually wants to express through art

Tribe Nine (13 episodes, on Crunchyroll/Funimation)

What happens when you put Dangan Ronpa's Kodaka Kazutaka and baseball together (Again)? An off-the-wall futuristic dystopia where territorial battles are determined by XB (eXtreme Baseball) on the streets of Neo-Tokyo. It lives up to its name: in addition to martial arts and parkour, players use robotic armor, explosives, canons, and motorcycles to give themselves an edge. At its heart is the message that sports are more fun when played together, and there's no point at being the best at something if you're standing at the top alone.

The Minato Tribe is led by Kamiya Shun, who was forged by the lawless era of XB, when games were won with outright brutality. Through Arisugawa Saori, he unlearned his violent style and embraced playing for fun. Saori and Kamiya are a catcher and pitcher combo called a battery. My baseball-liking friend says this makes them "baseball married." When others couldn't handle the strength of Kamiya's pitches, Saori stepped up and became his catcher. Whether their relationship is romantic or not, they care deeply for each other,
though this means Kamiya hides the severity of his weakened constitution from Saori to spare her grief. (This does not go as planned)

Haru meets Kamiya when the latter saves him from local thugs. He joins the Minato Tribe with little knowledge of XB and even less confidence in his own abilities. Timid and filled with more anxiety than a shaken box of chihuahuas, Haru realizes his strengths with guidance from Kamiya. Haru admires Kamiya deeply, and also finds Saori attractive, though he doesn't act on his feelings for either.

Kazuki is a later addition to the Minato Tribe,
After Kamiya's passing.
He markets himself as a strategist. He fine with using any tactic, however underhanded, but he quickly learns that isn't Minato Tribe's style. Kazuki is arrogant and condescending, and often takes his mockery of others too far. Haru does his best to balance this, even though Kazuki ought to get punched in the face.
Kazuki is a reject of the Imperial Family's project to raise an XB Player Capable of Conquering All Of Japan. While he wants revenge on Neo-Tokyo's reigning king, his feelings for his successor make this Complicated.

Not gonna lie, I'd ship Haru with any of the other 3 characters listed. I also like Kamiya/Saori.

Suggested Prompts:
  • Haru and Saori bonding over thoughts of Kamiya.
  • Kazuki genuinely having fun practicing XB with Haru
  • Kazuki trying to manipulate Haru with unexpected results
  • Soft Kamiya and Saori moments

I will never recover from the cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. I like the main trio a lot, but I'd be fine with an introspective solo piece or combination of the listed characters, especially if its Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi. I'm extremely into them as a ship. Cheng Xiaoshi's Lu Guang flashback sequence made me cry, and I was emotionally destroyed by how deep Lu Guang's feelings for Cheng Xiaoshi run below the surface. I don't even care who tops, I just like them together and want them to be happy. Honestly, I'm also curious about how the main trio would go as an OT3. While the prompts below are (mostly) lighthearted, angst is also welcome.

Possible Suggestions:
  • Lu Guang, Cheng Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling inexplicably have their respective, cat, dog and bunny ears. How did this happen? Is it just a dream? Is someone altering reality by doodling on photographs?
  • A box of kittens is found outside the photo studio.
  • Happy moments with Cheng Xiaoshi lead to a sad internal monologue for Lu Guang.
  • Lu Guang, Cheng Xiaoshi and Xiao Ling have a party.
  • Qiao Ling's perspective on watching Cheng Xiaoshi grow up, or her increasing proximity to danger Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi face.
  • One of the bits that always made me crack up was Qiao Ling specifically using the possessed!Lu Guang thirst trap photo as her go-to Lu Guang visual aid, so a piece that explores why she chose that one and showing it to other people could be fun.
  • Lu Guang agrees to Cheng Xiaoshi taking photos of him, as long as they're for his eyes only. This could be sentimental or strategic time manipulation reasons, both, or something else entirely.
